Men’s Health and Wellness
Menopause has been a focus of women's health for decades. HRT or Hormone Replacement Therapy has been both a blessing and more recently, controversial. From the perspective of wellness and anti-aging, estrogen and progesterone replacement has addressed risk reduction from neoplasia to cardiovascular health. United States medical expertise has shifted its recommendations back and forth over the past ten years, often in contradiction. Conversely, the concept of addressing decreasing male hormone levels of the fourth, fifth decades and thereafter, including human growth hormone (HGH) and testosterone, has lagged in its apparent clinical significance and media attention. This male andropause is, in fact, a substantial regulatory androgen hormone deficiency. This is the most widely researched and recognized influence on aging, usually with onset in the mid-30's. Untreated, these levels may decrease more than one percent per year. More recently, testosterone replacement has become accepted in female HRT and male erectile dysfunction (ED).
Testosterone is the major sex hormone in men. It is produced in the testicles and has a spectrum of key functions. Testosterone builds muscle mass, improves erections, regulates libido or sex drive, increases stamina and endurance, and improves mental energy and sharpness. Most of all, it promotes an increased quality of life and wellness for men's health.
Some men are fortunate and maintain adequate testosterone levels well into their 50’s, however, a larger percentage of men begin feeling the effects of lower testosterone ten years earlier. Most men and their physicians are unaware of the relationship of low testosterone and somatostatin (HGH) to the onset of these classic signs and symptoms of andropause.
Signs and Symptoms of Poor Men's Health
- Fatigue and loss of stamina
- Reduced libido or sex drive
- Decreased sexual performance
- Depression and anxiety
- Aches and pains
- Irritability (mental stress)
- Sweating or flushing
- Loss of muscle mass (increased body mass index)
- Gain of fat (especially around the waist)
- Subtle lapses of memory
- Difficulties at work (balancing multi-tasking)
- Decreased bone mineralization and density (osteoporosis)
- Increased cardiac risk (atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease)
Onset of andropause can result from having just one or two of the listed conditions. Other diseases may have similar complaints, however, the widespread nature of testosterone deficiency and the ease of treatment make it even more important to address in men's health.
Natural testosterone is often confused with what is commonly referred to as “anabolic steroids”. Anabolic steroids are synthetic, non-natural, potent derivatives of testosterone. They are used for one sole purpose, building muscle mass. Anabolic steroids may be toxic at higher levels and lack the beneficial health qualities of natural testosterone. Natural testosterone replacement therapy is safe and effective when administered and monitored under knowledgeable physician management.
